We are Both Mommas

Momma, caretaker, nurturer,
provider, protector, fighter,
believer, cook, housekeeper and anchor...
In many ways, we are very different.
She is thirty-five. I am forty-three.
She is single. I am married.
She lives with and provides for her 6 year old son and daughter, her mom and two sisters. I live with my husband and three children.
She earns a little less than $1 a day. I earn... let's just say a little more than that.
We are both mommas

It is hard not to be discouraged by such outrageous disparities. Sometimes when I see the pervasiveness of the brokenness, it is paralyzing. And then I remember that we are all broken.
In spite of all the differences, however, there is something we share in common, we are both mommas.
We both have children who we love. We are both doing the best with what we have to protect and provide for our kids.

Up until a month ago, Sebastiana’s best was to cook all her food over an open flame and a small pile of sticks while squatting on a dirt floor in a small wooden structure that had zero ventilation so that every square inch of the interior of the structure (and probably her lungs) was covered in soot.
Thankfully, today Sebastiana has a few more tools in her belt to help her better provide for her six year-old son, Alex, her daughter, mother, and the two sisters who also live with her. Now, thanks to Living Gateways and Hands of Hope International, Sebastiana is able to cook food for her family in a much different setting- a totally different structure that has a new roof and a brand new stove that is vented to the outside.
A brand new stove

We are grateful to have been able to bless Sebastiana and her family with a roof and a stove. But we pray it doesn’t stop there. As our relationship with Sebastiana grows, we pray we will be able to continue to help her to be a happier, healthier momma. Happier, healthier mommas (and poppas) have better chances of making happier and healthier kiddos, right?!
So, yes, while we are very different, we are also alike. We both want a better tomorrow for our kids than our yesterdays.

There are many more Sebastianas and Alexes. God sees them all. He loves them more fiercely than any of us ever could. We pray for them. We will return as many times as it takes and even though our lives are very different...we are both mommas trying to love our babes.
